The recent tornados touching down in the Mid-West are serious. Friday’s ordeal began at 3:45pm as I was heading home from work. “Tornado Alert,” warnings popped up on my phone and 5 minute blasts sounded from the city’s public warning system. I found a shopping center that I often frequent and waited for the ensuing chaos to or to not develop. As I waited, I bought non-sense items to snack on while I waited for the storm to pass, at 3:55pm, when the public warnings said it might. As the storm developed, it became more and more obvious that the storm was not going to lift immediately. Since I knew the shopping center, I found things to buy but felt uncertain how to go about the storm warnings. Do I sit tight in my car or stay inside buildings? Several stores refused admittance when I tried to enter. As the storm peaked around 4:30pm, torrents of rain drenched my car as I sat inside reading free comic books from a local retailer, eating popcorn and drinking soda from the dollar store. At 5:35pm the storm passed, and the storming warning system hailed its last blast. All in all, I am staying alert and ready. I am new to Nebraska and sitting in your car is not the best answer but my reflexes on this matter are as good as they are and I at least knew enough to pull off to the side of the road and wait for the storm to choose another time and place to stop me.
